A seven member Board of Directors oversees all operational and financial aspects of SDSI. All board members are reputable world-renowned orthopaedic physicians with a broad background in orthopaedic education and training.

Dr. James C. Esch
James C. Esch, M.D. founded the course in 1983. His passion for education and drive for excellence is contagious. He has inspired generations of orthopaedic surgeons to provide innovative and technically advanced care. Each year, he builds on the attributes of the previous year to construct an improved annual program.

Dr. Jon “J.P.” Warner
Jon “J.P.” Warner, M.D. is a Chief of Harvard Shoulder Service, Co-Director of Harvard Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Harvard Medical School. His wealth of expertise is broad and includes Arthroplasty, Reconstruction, Arthroscopy, Fractures, Scapular Winging, and treatment of complications.

Dr. Matthew Provencher
Matthew Provencher, M.D. Matthew Provencher, M.D. is a member of the San Diego Shoulder Institute Board of Directors. He specializes in complex shoulder instability, reconstruction of the shoulder, rehabilitation, and sports medicine injuries. Dr. Provencher’s attributes include the development of specialized treatment programs for patients using cutting-edge joint resurfacing. His recent work with Navy Seals makes him a leading expert in rehabilitative shoulder programs.

Dr. Mark Getelman
Mark H. Getelman, M.D. graduated from Tulane University and the University of Florida College of Medicine.
He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Boston University. While in Boston, Dr. Getelman received additional fellowship training. He spent one year as an orthopedic trauma fellow at Boston City Hospital and one year as a sports medicine and adult reconstructive surgery fellow at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, a Tufts University affiliate.
Dr. Getelman has published articles on shoulder, knee, and ankle topics and has written several textbook chapters. He has presented scientific papers at national orthopedic meetings and has taught advanced arthroscopic surgical techniques to physicians nationwide and worldwide. In addition, Dr. Getelman is currently the co-director of the prestigious Southern California Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and has participated in the training of over 50 orthopedic fellows since joining SCOI.

Dr. Gregory Alberton
Gregory Alberton, M.D. is a California native who grew up under the influence of Dr. James Esch. Following the steps of his mentor, Dr. Alberton pursued a career in orthopaedics. He is known as a hand specialist, and also maintains expertise in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Dr. Jonathan Ticker
Jonathan B. Ticker, M.D. is a board-certified and fellowship-trained shoulder and sports medicine specialist who treats both nonoperative and operative conditions of the shoulder. When shoulder surgery is required, he focuses on minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures to aid in return of function. An accomplished medical researcher and author of over 40 publications regarding the shoulder, Dr. Ticker is a lecturer for various international and national courses, including for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, as well as International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, Turkish Shoulder and Elbow Society, and Japanese Shoulder Society.
He has served as an orthopedic and sports medicine adviser to numerous professional, collegiate and youth athletic teams. Dr. Ticker has been Chair of the Medical Committee for the 2002 & 2009 USGA Open Championships, and the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black. He also acted as medical staff for players in the PGA Tour FedEx Event, The Barclay’s at Bethpage Black Course in 2001, and on national team’s medical staff for the United States Soccer Federation, including FIFA Men’s and Women’s World Cup events.
