Dr. Christian Gerber

Christian Gerber is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. After medical school at the universities of Bern and Yale, he trained in neurology, internal medicine, and general surgery. His orthopedic education took place in Bern, Paris, and San Antonio. He was appointed Professor and Chair at the Cantonal Hospital Fribourg in 1992 and at his current position as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Zurich in 1995. He has numerous honorary memberships from, among others, the Western Orthopaedic Society, the Spanish Shoulder and Elbow Society, the French Society of Orthopaedic Surgery, Swiss Orthopaedics, the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He has authored over 350 peer-reviewed publications. He is the only four-time winner of the Charles S. Neer Award presented by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the first non-American winner of the Kappa Delta Award presented by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a recipient of the Arthur Steindler Award of the Orthopaedic Research Society. In 2000 he created the ResOrtho Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education which supports young academic careers and has contributed to Balgrist Campus, a novel infrastructure for orthopedic research and development.
